Welcome to Bristol, the capital of the South West of England. With a population of approximately 400,000, it is England's sixth, and the United Kingdom's ninth most populated city. It received its royal charter in 1155 and was granted county status in 1373.
Bristol is one of the centres of culture, employment and education in the region. From it's earliest days it prosperity had been linked to the Port Of Bristol , the commercial port, which was once in the city centre, but has now moved to the Bristol Channel Coast. The city is famous for it's music and film industries
Bristol's harbourside is buzzing with artistic and cultural activity, from the city centre to the Cumberland Basin. Bars, Restaurants and cafes, some housed in converted transit sheds and tea warehouses can be found along the quayside, known locally as The Waterfront.
Bristol has undergone a massive transformation over recent years, with a brand new multi-million pound shopping development, known as Cabot Circus, opening during 2008 revolutionising the shopping experience in the city. The harbourside has morphed from a derelict industrial area, to a thriving business and lesiure area full of new office, retail and residential developments - from Temple Quay to the east of the central area, to Hotwells in the West. This represents a massive financial investment in the city by both national and international companies.
Throughout the year there are a diverse and exciting array of events including the spectacular Harbour Festival and the Balloon Fiesta.
Tourists from home & abroad are warmly welcomed, with such iconic landmarks as the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the SS Great Britain, Brunel's old train shed and much more to explore.
Bristol - A city of culture
Bristol is a city deep in culture and can lay claim to the birthplace of many famous individuals, bands and groups.
Musically, the city is the birthplace of such as Portishead (named after a town near to Bristol), Tricky and Massive Attack. Drum'n'Bass artistes such as Roni Size, Kosheen, DJ Krust and More Rockers also hail from the city.
On the small screen, Bristol has played a major part in Casualty, Deal or No Deal, Being Human and E4 teen drama, Skins. Aardman Animations makers of Creature Comforts, Morph and Wallace & Gromit. Bristol also is the home of the BBC Natural History Unit, which has brought many high quality documentaries of flora & fawna to the small screen.
On the large screen, some of Bristol's proud productions have included Cary Grant and Sir Michael Redgrave.
